Cedar Walk
Bainbridge Island, Washington
The cedars were already doing the work. We opened a path that follows a deer trail, lifted only what blocked the walk, and left the moss.
Ferns and salal were thinned, not replaced. A stone bench sits where a gap in the canopy lets a square of light fall in the afternoon. In rain the path darkens and the garden becomes a room.
No irrigation. No lighting. The walk is used in the day, and the woods keep the night.
