Rooftop ยท 2024
Harbor Roof
San Francisco, California
The roof had been a mechanical desert. We built a shallow soil field in pale concrete planters and planted grasses that like wind: miscanthus, sesleria, carex.
There is a narrow path and a long bench facing the bay. Irrigation is drip, hidden. In fog the grasses hold droplets; in sun they move. The city is a haze, not a view to frame.
The garden is public to the building, private to the street. It is used at lunch and at the end of the day, which is all a roof needs to be.
