Courtyard ยท 2019
Lantern House Garden
Berkeley, California
The house is a low timber box looking onto a small square of ground. We treated the courtyard as a floor, not a collection of plants: pale gravel, raked; a single Japanese maple; a line of moss along the veranda.
A stone basin collects rain from the roof. There is no lawn, no seasonal bedding. The garden changes by light and by the maple, which is enough.
We visit once a year to prune. The rest is the client, a rake, and weather.
